What we do:
The choir rehearse on a Thursday night at 7.30pm and sing on Sunday mornings at 9.30am to lead, support and encourage worship.
When requested, the choir will also sing at wedding.
What we offer:
We provide training to help choristers to:
- Sing the correct notes
- Sing in tune
- Improve quality of tone
- Develop attack and unanimity
- Work towards a balance and blend of voices, and
- An absolute clarity of words.
We will teach, and develop:
- Aural skills
- General Musicianship
- Music reading skills
As we are affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music our choristers follow a training scheme called 'Voice for Life'.
This teaches the essential skills, and leads to light-blue, dark-blue, red and yellow ribbon awards when successfully completed.
More advanced awards at Diocesan level (Dean's and Bishop's) are also available. These are all open to adults as well as children.
As well as working in our own Parish, we are working to establish links with other local churches, occasionally join forces for special services.
In the summer we intend to host Festival Evensong attended by several choirs.
In November we will attend the Diocesan Choir Festival in Derby Cathedral.
We are well resourced with a large (and expanding) library, digital piano and superb Renn pipe organ.
The Choir Director (Tim Hawkins) studied the organ at the London College of Music gaining performing and teaching diplomas before graduating with distinction winning the Westminster prize for musicianship. He then qualified as a teacher after studying at Reading University, and was formerly Head of Music at a secondary school.
This is his sixth parish appointment. As well as Parish duties he is an examiner and and occasional tutor for the Royal School of Church Music .
Auditions:
We do ask prospective choristers to audition. (Singing 'Happy birthday to you' for example). Choristers need to be old enough to read texts - about seven or eight years of age is often right. Auditions can be arranged at any time.
Membership is free.
We do expect choristers to attend all practices and sunday morning services.
Practice:
Thursday night in St. George's church at 7.30pm
