Mothers’ Union News
We had a successful Deanery social evening on 9th July. We were pleased to welcome visitors from Glossop, Dinting, Charlesworth and Hayfield. Gill Crosland, who had a knee replacement the week before, attended, and took part in a short play reading sketch. She also produced two “easy” quizzes. Our committee members provided the savouries for supper. The visitors brought the cakes. It was an enjoyable evening.
Mothers' Union at St George's Baghdad
Baghdad Mothers' Union is growing and extending its work to provide food, health care and education for families in the war-torn Iraqi capital. The church is on one of the most dangerous streets in Baghdad. Although its four-strong lay leadership team has been killed, the church is filled to overflowing. The vicar, Canon Andrew White says, "Despite all the difficulties this is a most wonderful church of people who are desperate to stay close to the Lord amidst great turmoil".
Reporting on the Mothers' Union branch he writes; "Mothers' Union at St George's continues to grow from strength to strength and is doing an amazing job. By God’s grace we are managing to find the money we need. We have no reserves but we get the money just before we need it". He adds; "in a tragic situation Mothers' Union members are bringing hope and doing outstanding work. Their membership is increasing all the time and what is particularly good is that many of the young women who are not yet married are actively involved in the movement. Mothers' Union continues to head up the relief work of distributing food several times a month to hundreds of people. They have also established an outstanding kitchen and are now producing a huge amount of food and cooking for everybody who comes to church and the school.
They maintain their work in the community, especially for the children's home, and they continue to provide major support to the Mother Theresa Home for children with severe congenital abnormalities".
Baghdad now has very limited medical and dental facilities. Canon White says plans are being made to establish a full medical clinic and dentistry run by Mothers' Union at the church. "We have found people who will donate drugs and equipment and we already have a doctor and a dentist", says Canon White. "This is an amazing development and will mean that the Mothers' Union is providing food, medicine, dentistry and education".
